Health and safety are always our first priority in Scouting and here in the Narragansett Council. With Coronavirus and now Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) becoming more prevalent in Southeastern New England we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of our program.

Travel Advisory: Many states (including Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut) have travel restrictions with various requirements for people who visit their state as well as for residents who leave the state and return.

These requirements may include mandatory quarantine, COVID testing, and fines for those who ignore the requirements.

We recommend that Scouts and leaders only participate in Scouting activities in the state in which they reside.

Do not travel outside of your state for Scouting activities or meetings without first checking to see what restrictions apply to you. Check the website for your home state and your destination state and follow all requirements. These state restrictions can change at any time. See state restrictions here: MassachusettsConnecticut and Rhode Island.

Under no circumstances will the Narragansett Council or the Boy Scouts of America be responsible for fines or penalties for people who don’t know or ignore government travel restrictions.

Unit Meeting Locations & Activities

Most schools, churches and community centers are currently closed to group meetings. We anticipate that there will be strict limitations on facilities this fall that will likely impact your unit’s meeting location! We advise that you be proactive and that you reach out to your charter organization this summer to request and start planning for safe meeting space in the fall.

Your leaders, parents and Scouts should plan on helping your charter organization with cleaning of facilities before and after any use and implementing all appropriate guidelines for group size, social distancing and other protocols. This, in fact, could be a great service project for your unit to help your charter organization prepare its facilities and make any necessary modifications for all of its programs.

Camps, & Council Properties

Narragansett Council Properties are now open on a limited basis for Scouting activities! Decisions on camp availability are made with safety as the foremost concern.

Camp reservations can be made here.

The West Bay Scout Shop is open with limited hours Tuesday - Saturday 10-6 for limited in-person shopping and conducting of other Scout business. The Scout Shop will continue free shipping on all orders, which you may call or send via email. Due to Massachusetts restrictions, the East Bay Scout Shop remains closed to customers.

The Council Office will remain closed at this time with all employees working from home.

Here are a few things to know about our office closure:

  • Many of our staff are working from home, but are still available to assist you via phone or email
  • Applications are still being processed. Send via mail to the Narragansett Council or via email to your Unit Service Coordinator (Kara or Charles)
  • Rangers continue to work on many projects at our camps
  • District Executives and unit support staff are still available to assist you via phone, email, etc.
  • Life Scouts working on the rank of Eagle, our national office is aware that this is a disruption and is diligently working on steps to ensure that no Scout is penalized on their path to Eagle
    • During this period Scouts are encouraged to mail their documentation to the office at Narragansett Council, PO Box 14777, East Providence, RI 02914.
  • Boards of Review for Eagle and other ranks should be held virtually, where possible. The Boy Scouts of America is allowing extensions for Life Scouts that are working on Eagle if they are prevented from finishing specifically because of coronavirus. See more on how the BSA is adjusting rank requirements due to coronavirus.

Council Activities & Programs

District and council level meetings and activities are being held via Zoom or other video conferencing platforms. This includes Roundtables.

Our staff are working on innovative program ideas that would allow your Scouts to participate remotely. Check out NCBSA.org/VirtualScouting!

We are preparing some council run in-person programming for youth and adults.  Please stay tuned to our Council Calendar and our Virtual Scouting page.

Other Important Information & Links

We are following the recommended guidelines of our state leadership. For more information please visit the department of health website for your state:

More information on Coronavirus is available on the CDC website and The Boston Globe shared these 9 tips on speaking with young children about their concerns about Coronavirus.

As cases of Coronavirus persist and EEE is still a concern in Southern New England, the Narragansett Council will take steps to ensure the safety of its Scouts and families. Please use discretion when making decisions about your local unit meetings and activities. If you or a member of your family is or has been sick please stay at home. Safety at all levels is our priority and we need your help to keep everyone safe and healthy.

If a Scout or leader in a stable group tests positive for COVID-19, the entire group (if they have been in close contact with the participant) needs to quarantine for 14 days. Immediately notify us at NCBSA.org/CovidReport!

The Narragansett Council will continually reevaluate its camping/meeting/activity policy during this outbreak. Visit NCBSA.org for the most up to date information.

Of course, this is an evolving situation and guidance will change as more information becomes available. Please check back regularly.
